Textile recycling is the process of recovering textiles and turning them into new products. This can be done by making new clothes, or by turning them into other useful items such as rags, stuffing for furniture, or insulation for buildings.

The process of textile recycling (clothes recycling) can be broken down into three stages: collection, processing, and manufacturing.

Collection: Collection is the stage where a company collects discarded clothing and textiles from various sources, such as charity shops, textile waste recycling centres, textile recycling banks, and even individuals who are looking to dispose of their unwanted garments.

Processing: Processing is the stage where the collected materials are sorted to remove any contaminated or unusable materials before they are sent on for remanufacturing.

Manufacturing: Manufacturing is the stage in which items are sorted. Textile recycling is the process of recovering textiles and turning them into new products.

This can be done by making new clothes, or by turning them into other useful items such as rags, stuffing for furniture, or insulation for buildings. 

According to research, in the US, there are a total of approximately 34,000 textile recycling facilities.

The United States is fifth in the world for this process, followed by Canada, China, Belgium, and Germany.

According to one study, 100% of textiles worldwide can be recycled, while 70% are disposed of in landfills and 30% are recycled.

Moreover, a wide variety of materials can be recycled: clothing (cotton, linen, synthetics); yarns; threads fabric remnants (scraps), leather, and paper.

However, that is all being processed by recyclers around the globe.

However, in this article, we will explain in detail the different ways involved.

1. Sell your clothing or textile items to recycling organizations

One of the best ways you can make money from textile recycling is by selling your textile items to recycling organizations.

Recycling organisations will, therefore, buy your clothing and other textile products for a fee that you can pay in cash or credit.

However, not all textile recycling organizations pay for textile items donated to them, either by charity shops, textile waste collectors, or more. 

These organisations are making sure that most textile waste doesn’t end up in landfills.

According to a study in the United States, a total of 80 million tons of textiles are disposed of every year.

2. Start Your Own Business

Another way to make money from textile recycling is to use these textiles to start your own business.

This can involve setting up a store where you sell used clothing and other textile items, or it can involve setting up a manufacturing process to create new products from recycled materials. 

For instance, opening a thrift store for individuals who are interested in buying these textiles, Despite this, most textile business owners in Africa, Asia, and Europe sell used clothing or other textile materials.

A better idea would be to sell the clothes you have on eBay, or online markets such as the Facebook marketplace.

If you are selling on eBay, this is where you need an established company that buys clothes for recycling and then resells them, like a resale shop.

Start with old clothes you no longer need.

3. Sell them to thrift stores or consignment shops

Another great way to make money from textile recycling is to collect used clothing and other textile items from individuals and businesses and then sell them to thrift stores or consignment shops.

At thrift stores or consignment shops, these textiles will follow due processes, such as cleaning and sorting. Make sure that they are acceptable to others. 

Nevertheless, just like opening your own business to sell used clothes or any other textile material, that’s how thrift stores operate.
